Status and documents

How long protection lasts

Georgia
Georgia has no temporary protection. Ukrainians stay visa-free for 1 year (cut from 3 years in 2025); those who entered before 24 Feb 2025 and have stayed may remain until 24 Feb 2027 (Government Decree No. 80 of 24 Feb 2026). To stay longer you need a residence permit (work, study, family, property, investment) or international protection: refugee or humanitarian status.

Documents

Georgia
No registration is needed for a visa-free stay: you enter with a Ukrainian passport for travel abroad. Since 1 Jan 2026 foreigners entering as visitors must have health and accident insurance for the whole stay (cover of at least 30,000 GEL), in Georgian or English. A residence permit requires a valid passport and documents for the chosen ground (work, study, family, property); asylum seekers hand their passport to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the whole procedure.

Where and how to apply

Georgia
Residence permits: Public Service Development Agency, through the Public Service Halls. Asylum: at the border or at the Department of International Protection of the Migration Department, Ministry of Internal Affairs, 16 Mikheil Gakhokidze St, Tbilisi (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00). The state payments for Ukrainians are administered by the Social Service Agency.

Processing time

Georgia
A visa-free stay needs no registration. Processing times for residence permits and asylum: —. During the asylum procedure you get a Georgian ID card but may not leave the country without permission.

When protection ends

Georgia
The visa-free stay ends one year after entry (24 Feb 2027 for those covered by the extension); after that you need a residence permit or must leave — overstaying leads to fines and problems at the border. Re-entry after any trip abroad is at the border guards' discretion. Humanitarian status ends immediately if you travel to Ukraine, even briefly.

Men aged 18–60

Georgia
Georgia does not check Ukrainian military obligations: men enter visa-free like other Ukrainians (1 year from entry), and the EU rule of 2026 does not apply here. At the Ukrainian Embassy in Tbilisi men aged 18–60 receive most consular services, including passports, only with a valid military registration document (e-VOD in Reserve+); a certificate for return to Ukraine is issued without it.

Trips to Ukraine

Georgia
Possible, but the extension to 24 Feb 2027 covers only those who entered before 24 Feb 2025 and stayed; after a new entry the standard visa-free stay of 1 year from entry applies, and since 1 Jan 2026 foreigners entering Georgia need health insurance (min. 30,000 GEL cover). The 45 GEL allowance stops from the month after you leave Georgia, the 300 GEL family housing payment only if all family members leave; free state healthcare requires a continuous stay (trips of up to 3 days do not break it).

Children without parents

Georgia
Georgia has no special procedure for Ukrainian children. The adult with the child should carry the birth certificate and the parents' notarised consent or power of attorney (or a guardianship decision): they are needed to act as the child's legal representative, e.g. to enrol them in school or claim aid. Children left without care are referred to the Social Service Agency (guardianship and custody body); the Ukrainian Embassy in Tbilisi helps with documents.

Travel, pets and language

How to get there

Georgia
No flights from Ukraine. Most people fly via Poland (Wizz Air to Kutaisi from Warsaw, Katowice, Poznań and Wrocław) or via other EU cities or Istanbul to Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi; overland the only route is a long trip through Turkey to the Sarpi crossing near Batumi. Never enter Abkhazia or the Tskhinvali region from Russia: under Georgian law this is illegal. Health insurance is required at entry.

Pets

Georgia
Microchip, rabies vaccination given after the chip and at least 21 days before travel, a pet passport and a vet certificate from the country of departure; a rabies antibody test is usually not required. The National Food Agency checks documents at the border.

Driving licence

Georgia
A foreign (incl. Ukrainian) licence is valid in Georgia for 1 year from your last entry; by law no international permit is needed. After that, exchange it for a Georgian one without a test at the Service Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (approx. 15 GEL): since 2025 you need at least 185 days of lawful stay in Georgia (or a residence permit) and a confirmation from Ukraine that the licence is valid, apostilled and no older than 90 days; the Ukrainian licence is handed in.

Languages

Georgia
Georgian (its own alphabet). Many people, especially older ones, speak Russian; younger people often speak English. No free state Georgian courses for Ukrainians were found: —.

Work, healthcare and education

Right to work

Georgia
Since 1 March 2026 foreigners without permanent residence need a work permit: the employer first posts the job on Worknet for 10 days (Georgians have priority), then applies on the labour migration portal (200 GEL, up to 30 days, or 400 GEL, 10 working days); the self-employed apply themselves. Those already working on 1 March 2026 have until 1 Jan 2027. Courier, passenger transport and most tour-guide jobs are closed to foreigners. Asylum seekers and holders of refugee or humanitarian status are exempt; no exemption for Ukrainians on a visa-free stay was found.

Jobs in demand

Georgia
Service and sales workers, technicians and associate professionals are most in demand in all regions (UNDP labour-market study, 2023); the State Employment Support Agency received ~14,600 vacancies in 2025. Since March 2026 foreigners cannot work as couriers, passenger transport drivers or (except a small quota) tour guides.

Healthcare

Georgia
Partly. Until 1 Jan 2027 Ukrainians who arrived because of the war (from 1 Feb 2022) and live in Georgia continuously (trips of up to 3 days don't count) are covered by state programmes: emergency care including childbirth, immunisation, TB and HIV treatment, maternal and child health, mental health, diabetes, dialysis, rare diseases. Other care is paid; UNHCR points to discounted private insurance for Ukrainians (Ardi).
